RORO SERVICES

RO-RO refers to wheeled cargo such as cars, trucks, semi-trailer trucks, trailers and railroad cars etc. Hambantota International Port offers RO-RO services for transshipment, as well as local vehicle imports. Operating as a transshipment hub for RO-RO, HIP doubled its volumes in 2018, and has continued its steady growth over 2019 and 2020. In order to ensure greater efficiency, environment-friendliness, safety and better service to clients, HIP has invested approximately USD 600,000 in equipment and machinery. We have also signed Terminal Service Agreements with leading shipping lines.

The Bulk Terminal Operating System (BTOS) assures efficient and real-time data sharing with our clients, thereby helping us reduce operational complexities, optimize terminal productivity and effectively collaborate with multiple stakeholders. This includes a real-time bar-code scanning system. Our E-Release system for Customs clearance is an effective step in minimizing paper usage and going green, which are on-going initiatives.

As the port & maritime industry embraces new technologies and best-practices, we are making sure that our staff are kept abreast of the latest developments. Staff trainings is carried out by Singaporean and Japanese port captains to ensure quality, productivity and efficiency.

Port security at HIP conforms to the latest international codes and conventions. Our investments in advanced security systems includes 24-hour surveillance and comprehensive insurance covering all aspects of the port operations and management.

Value Added Services for Transhipment Vehicles

As RO-RO cargo accounts for a significant portion of the business at HIP, a vehicle value addition facility is being set up to promote HIP as hub for RO-RO cargo and vehicle services.

We are in the process of setting up network activities at the port, which will be managed and facilitated by a Service Provider (ASP) approved by the Hambantota International Port(HIP), in accordance with regulations stipulated by the port management and Sri Lanka Customs. These are intended to create a ONE-STOP SERVICE CENTRE for RO-RO customers and shipping lines. Some of the services provided by this facility include: minor to major accident restorations, upgrades, conversions, interior and exterior clean-ups and routine maintenance needed for used vehicles. These services will add value to the supply chain during transit. Inspection and certification services are also offered when required by the shippers and/or by the overseas consignees. Such services are offered by experienced professionals using the very latest technology.

Government regulations

The value-added services are offered in accordance with rules for the operation of Inward Processing Scheme for Temporary Importation for Export (The TIEP Scheme) as stated in the Extra Ordinary Gazette No.1053/11 of 1998 of Sri Lanka.
